Chicken Soup for the Soul in the Classroom- Books
Chicken Soup for the Soul in the Classroom (2007, elementary, middle school, high school editions), co-authored with Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. As a secondary school teacher in Michigan for 31 years, Anna used Chicken Soup stories on a daily basis to motivate, inspire, and to create positive changes in her classrooms and in the world. In Chicken Soup for the Soul in the Classroom, Anna has combined students’ favorite stories with lesson plans and activities that light a fire for reading while building character and creating a classroom “family.”
Research indicates that success in school is highly correlated with success in reading. The best of technology cannot replace the written word, nor the brain activity that is generated from reading. It is critical to every aspect of education, and being read to at any age makes one far more likely to become a reader, and ultimately to become more successful in school and in life.
Students love stories and they learn best when a story helps them to make a connection with the contentthe lesson to be learned. This curriculum is designed to give every teacher an excuse to read to their students every day, at every grade level, in every community. Anna’s books include stories and lesson plans to change the world one student at a time.
Important features of Chicken Soup for the Soul in the Classroom include lessons and student activities that will:
- Foster the joyfulness of reading.
- Develop expressive writing skills.
- Empower students to make positive changes in their lives, and in the world.
- Adapt easily to each student's capabilities, from the academically challenged to the academically talented.
- Provide a varied approach to learning by accessing several domains such as verbal, musical, logical, visual, kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal skills.
- Offer teachers a choice of time commitments, from a one-minute reading to a year-long project.
- Make a connection with students, independent of the subject matter taught. It is the ultimate guidebook for character education.
- Perfect to provide continuity and quality when a teacher must be absent and a substitute needs to present a lesson.

NOTE: I do not advise the purchase of all three levels of Chicken Soup Classroom books. The lesson plans and activities are grade-level specific, but most of the stories are the same. I recommend that you choose the level most suited to your needs and adapt for various ages and abilities.

(2010) is offered as a FREE e-book for anyone purchasing the Chicken Soup for the Soul in the Classroom
books through the Central Michigan University website (www.emc.cmich.edu/products/unkovich

is a compilation of ideas and stories that reflect this award-winning teacher. This book of true stories and teacher tips may also be purchased in print version through www.emc.cmich.edu/products/unkovich. Listen to Anna read a motivational story for teachers about a pep talk from Carl Reiner.
those who connect with their students
and who inspire them to learn,
are the ones who are open to opportunities
that come to them seemingly from out of nowhere.
Teachers refer to these occasions

and are grateful when these gifts occur.
Caring to Teach, Teaching to Care - Book
Caring to Teach, Teaching to Care
is co-authored with Dave Opalewski (2011). This book is about the importance of putting Relationship, Respect, Responsibility, Relevance, and Rigor back into the classroom. At a time when educators are forced into over-testing and student dropout rates are increasing at an alarming rate, this book is a reminder to teach to the heart and the head will follow. Anna and Dave share their passion for teaching and their educational philosophy of developing students’ hearts as well as minds. The stories will warm your heart, while the content and “thought starters” will make you ponder your own teaching philosophy. It is available as an e-book or in print through barnesandnoble.com
, or through any major booksellers.
Teach to the HEART
and the HEAD will follow.
